First Friday Drum Circles
Where: Mountain Valley Studios
When: First Friday of Every Month
(beginning Jan. 6,2012)
7:00-8:30pm*
What: An informal gathering of people who share an interest in playing drums together. Each session has a "facilitator," who guides the group and encourages participants to share their ideas and creativity within the group. While the facilitator gives guidance to the group, the participants make up the music as they go along, using their listening and playing skills to make musical connections and express themselves. Instrumentation centers around drums and percussion, but may include other instruments, such as flutes, didgeridoos, and other non-percussion instruments. Practically anything that can be banged on to make noise can be used as a percussion instrument such as cans, buckets, pipes, etc. Participants can bring their own instruments, or use one available at the studio.....or both. It is common to pass instruments around to allow for more creative experimentation within the group. Hand drums & other percussion instruments can also be purchased from Mountain Valley Studios, or other area music retailers.
* 7:00-7:30 is an instruction time for those who have not had experience with hand drumming and/or drum circles. 7:30-8:30 is open jam session.
Who: Anyone.... doctors, lawyers, business professionals, teachers, housewives, construction workers, musicians, students, senior citizens, etc. Groups are open to all ages. (Due to the hours and the mixed nature of the group, however, participants under the age of 14 should be accompanied by an adult). It is not necessary to have any sort of musical background or training to participate in drum circles.
Cost: FREE! FREE! FREE!
A small concession stand will be available during each session.
