Music Theory, Composition, & Improvisation Classes

Advanced Music Theory

Upper level music theory instruction for the student who either wants to seek advanced placement in college theory classes, or who simply wants to go a step beyond what they are able to cover in their private music lessons.

Since classes meet just once a week, students will be expected to complete assignments at home.

All necessary books will be provided through the book fee listed below.  This will include: Barron's AP Music Theory , a tablet of manuscript paper, and a 3-ring binder for assignments, etc.

This is a 16-week course.  Students should not expect to complete the entire textbook in one semester.  This class can be followed with a level 2 class, or with private theory lessons.

Spring Schedule:  Mondays    4:30-5:30pm
                             January 30 - May 21
                             (no class on March 12)

Theory, Harmony, & Improvisation

This class is for the student who already plays their instrument at least at an intermediate level.  Using the Grove School's text "Theory, Harmony, & Improvisation for all Instruments", students will learn to improvise and harmonize using all types of scales, modes, and chords.  Each 90-minute class will include theory/harmony instruction and assignments, as well as improvisation assignments that will be introduced in class and practiced daily at home.

This class is suitable for students who play piano, or any wind or string instrument.  It is not necessary to already know all of your scales, but it is helpful to have at least been exposed to major and minor scales at some level.  We recommend that you inform your private instructor that you are taking this class, so that he/she can include review of scales in your lessons.

Digital pianos will be provided in class for the piano students.  All other students should bring their own instrument to each class, as they will be used for improvisation exercises.

Spring Schedule:  Mondays    6:00-7:30pm
