COLLABORATIVE PIANO CLASS

Picture
Pianists often work with (i.e., collaborate) other musicians when they perform.  This can be done in many ways.  One very common way is by playing duets with other pianists.  This is when two pianists play together.   You will also often see piano ensembles, which involves three, or more, pianists playing at the same time.  This can be done on one piano, or can use multiple pianos.
Pianists collaborate with other types of musicians, as well.  A piano concerto is where the solo of an orchestra piece is written for and played on the piano.  Chamber music is instrumental music that is written for smaller groups, often including a piano.  When a single pianist plays along with a singer or a soloist on a wind or string instrument, he/she is usually called the accompanist.

Because these opportunities are so readily available, it is important for piano students to learn to collaborate with other musicians.  The Collaborative Piano Class at Mountain Valley Studios will begin to develop this skill in students who are already taking private piano lessons.  Through rhythm ensembles, duets, piano ensembles, and in-class accompanying assignments, students will learn when to follow, when to lead, how to respond to a conductor, how to listen to other musicians while focusing on their own music, etc.  They will also challenge their sight-reading abilities, as we are often called upon to accompany a soloist with very little notice or practice time.

This is a multi-age, multi-level class.  Many duets and ensembles are written in such a way that a beginner part can be assigned to one student and an advanced part be assigned to another. So, students will be paired/grouped based on the parts available in each piece of music.  Beginner piano students are welcome to join!  Students should, however, be reading music on the staff and playing with both hands at the same time before enrolling in this class.

Due to the fact that there will be combined ages and levels, advance enrollment is necessary, and refunds cannot be given.  Each session is planned out based on the levels of the students enrolled.  Each student will be given a personalized packet of music and exercises that will be used during the semester.  They will be expected to keep up with the syllabus and practice their music at home, so that class time can be used productively.

This class is open to all piano students, regardless of where you take piano lessons.  Students of Rebecca Brown, however, will receive a 25% discount on their class fee.

To register, click the link at the bottom of this page.  After your registration is received, Mrs. Brown will contact you to confirm, and you will receive an emailed invoice. You may pay online through that invoice, or deliver cash or check to the studio.
